In our national culture
managers are generally told that they are spot on. When presentations are given
junior staff will support and praise as most managers/supervisors will take
even positive criticism at workplace in a negative way. At the same time
managers unduly feel it is their responsibility to give feedback downwards,
whether it is wanted or not. This tends to be critical. Thus we have feedback
going up which is predominantly positive and going down which is weighted
towards the negative.
Break this feedback culture by getting managers to ask their staff, “What kind of a person do you want to be led by?” Do this yourself as the senior executive, in front of all ranks, so that it sinks into the fabric of the organizational culture. Then act on the advice received!
